Celtic and Hearts will battle it out for the Scottish Premiership title this Saturday, and the referee and VAR team are locked in for the momentous clash.
One point separates the sides heading into the final day after a frantic midweek round that swung back and forward before settling in Celtic’s favour at Fir Park.
Martin O’Neill’s side looked set to hand Hearts a major advantage when Motherwell equalised late on. At that stage, Hearts were on course to head into the weekend three points clear and with the goal difference edge as well.
Kelechi Iheanacho changed that.
The striker held his nerve deep into stoppage time to convert from the spot and seal a dramatic 3-2 win for Celtic, keeping the title race alive going into the final fixture of the season.
Hearts did their job comfortably in Edinburgh, brushing Falkirk aside 3-0 at Tynecastle to stay top of the table. But they now arrive in Glasgow knowing the equation is straightforward.
If Celtic win, the title stays in Glasgow’s East End. Anything else and Hearts are champions.
The SFA have now confirmed the officiating team for the title decider at Celtic Park.
Don Robertson takes charge of the match, with Calum Spence and David Roome on the lines.
Kevin Clancy will oversee VAR duties alongside assistant Matthew MacDermid.
All eyes will be on Robertson and the officials, given the stakes involved. Every decision will be dissected in a game carrying massive consequences for both clubs.
Celtic Park should provide the backdrop expected for an occasion like this. Full voice, full colour, and no shortage of tension from the first whistle.
There is also the sense that this could be the final major chapter in Martin O’Neill’s Celtic story. The legendary manager has the chance to sign off with another league title, something few would have imagined possible when Hearts opened daylight at the top earlier in the run-in.
There is still a Scottish Cup Final against Dunfermline to come on May 23, but no Hoops supporter will be looking beyond Saturday.
Nothing else matters until the title is settled.
