Vasilis Barkas has earned a call up from the Greece national team after impressing out on loan to FC Utrecht [@choria80].

He has been selected for Greece’s Nations League matches against Cyprus and Northern Ireland.

Since leaving Celtic during the summer, the 28-year old keeper has found game time in Eredivisie having started every game in goal for FC Utrecht.

It has been made clear to Barkas that he had no future at Celtic with the further addition of Benjamin Siegrist to the already stable goalkeeping team of Joe Hart and Scott Bain.

The former AEK Athens goalkeeper earned great praise at the weekend following his sides 1-0 victory over Vitesse with the keeper making 5 saves as well as 13 recoveries during the match.

With Barkas still being on the books at Celtic, it is hoped that he continues to put in performances for FC Utrecht and may return to playing for his international side having not played for the Greece national team since November 2020 in a 2-1 victory over Cyprus.

He hasn’t featured on the bench for Greece since then and will be hoping to make a permanent return to the squad. He will join up with Celtic forward Giorgos Giakoumakis who has also been selected by Gus Poyet.
