Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has a number of players to choose from in most positions across his Celtic team. At this time of year, it is no surprise that the Irishman is beginning to give minutes to everyone.
David Turnbull got an unexpected start midweek in which he netted. Backup striker Oh got the winner, too, in what was a productive night for the pair.
When the former bagged, he put his fingers next to his ears in a celebration which symbolised a blocking out of outside noise. Former Celt Chris Sutton couldn’t comprehend such an action. He said (Daily Record): “I didn’t quite understand David Turnbull’s fingers in the ears celebration against St Mirren the other night.”
Instead of trying to make statements through celebrations, Sutton believes the 24-year-old and some of his teammates should be focusing on their respective games. He said: “What I do know is Celtic’s fringe men need to worry less about the noise and do their talking on the pitch. Brendan Rodgers has set them a challenge – and given them a deadline. He hinted this week he is going to clear the decks somewhat in January as he feels his squad is too big.”
Anyone who is not a regular starter at Celtic must prove their abilities and look to impress in the limited game time they receive. This should be the primary focus of many members of the squad, thinks Sutton.
Liam Scales is a prime example of a player who has kept his head down and put in some terrific performances to earn a regular spot in the team. Many fringe players will aim to follow in his footsteps and stake a claim for a starting place.
