Fringe Celtic striker Johnny Kenny is reportedly in the running for a Republic of Ireland call-up this month, with manager Heimir Hallgrímsson hinting that two Shamrock Rovers players have made his long list for the upcoming Nations League play-off against Bulgaria.

Having represented Ireland at youth levels, he’s now looking like he’ll take the step up to the senior side, SunSport Ireland are reporting.

Kenny, who spent last season on loan at Rovers, is believed to be one of the names under consideration after an excellent campaign in Ireland, where he scored over 20 goals, including five in the UEFA Conference League, while also providing an assist in Europe.

Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley had hoped to bring him back on loan for another season, but Brendan Rodgers opted to keep him at Celtic, after losing Kyogo in the January window and not replacing the star striker.

The 21-year-old made his Celtic debut in the 4-1 win over Ross County, coming off the bench and providing an assist. He has since made three more substitute appearances.

With Ireland looking for fresh attacking options, Kenny’s goal-scoring form last season and European experience could put him in contention for a senior international debut sooner rather than later.
