ANGE POSTECOGLOU has weighed into the James McCarthy debate after the Celtic midfielder had an uninspiring first start for the club against Livingston.

The Irish international has come in for a lot of criticism and rumours of him struggling to adjust to Celtic’s system have also been claimed in some circles.

Asked if he believed the criticism of his midfielder was unfair, Ange responded.

“Fair or unfair, James is a big boy and I’m sure he’s had plenty of criticism in his career and it was his first game.” the Celtic manager told RecordSport.

“He will be the first to admit he didn’t have a great one but there were plenty of others alongside him who would also admit the same. I didn’t have a great day at the office, mate.

“We have a responsibility as a whole group to go out there and represent our club and our supporters and those kind of opinions can change pretty quickly. I’m sure James is aware of that.”

Again we have Ange not shirking from a question and getting it spot on. James will know himself he has to improve to keep a regular place in the team. The shock of coming into a setup where the demand is likely higher than most of the clubs James has been at.

The player had to train alone this summer after leaving Palace and suffered from the virus not long after coming to Celtic.

There’s every chance James can turn things around but he must get his head down and ignore the noise to give us his best.
