Celtic looked to have been handed a slight blow in their reported pursuit of Brighton and Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan.

As quoted by the Daily Record, LA Galaxy and former team-mate of Ryan’s at Club Brugge – Víctor Vazquez has revealed that the 29-year old is eager to join the Spanish side Real Sociedad and is looking forward to a return to the country.

“Maty is super motivated, super happy and eager to fight Alex Remiro for the number one keeper position at Sociedad.

“His time in Valencia left him with a very good taste in his mouth, even though he didn’t play as much as he wanted.

“He has always been very attached to Spain, he loves its culture and its food.”

Reports from Sun Sport have also reported that the shot-stopper is close to signing on the dotted line with Sociedad, agreeing a two-year deal which will cost them around £1 million.

Last season, Celtic’s goalkeeping fiasco was far from ideal, with Vasilias Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard all having periods between the sticks for the Hoops.

So, with the arrival of former Socceroos manager Ange Postecoglou, there were early suggestions that he was looking to sort that out by recruiting Ryan, who was his number one for the Australian national side.

Now though, it looks like Postecoglou will either have to stick with what he has got or look elsewhere at other goalkeeping targets.
