Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox this afternoon, a result that will feel frustrating given the chances the Hoops had to secure all three points, especially with Daizen Maeda’s late opportunity. However, it was a poor performance from club record signing Arne Engels that stood out, as he failed to make an impact in what was his fourth Glasgow Derby of the season.

Engels’ struggles were clear throughout the game. In a midfield battle where Celtic needed someone to step up, the Belgian failed to impose himself. He was often bypassed by Rangers’ quick transitions and looked sluggish in possession.
Paulo Bernardo, who replaced him in the 63rd minute, injected energy into the midfield and helped settle the team. His composure on the ball and his ability to recycle possession were a huge positive, providing the kind of stability that Engels was unable to offer.
Meanwhile, Celtic’s defence once again looked vulnerable against Rangers, and Liam Scales came under scrutiny for his role in Rangers’ goal. The Irishman was caught off guard as Cyriel Dessers powered through to put Rangers ahead. This marked the second consecutive derby at Ibrox where Scales has looked uncomfortable, failing to deal with the attacking threat.
Both players have had their moments, but neither has shown the consistency or quality required to make the position their own. As a result, Celtic’s defensive frailties have been exposed in recent months, and it’s clear that strengthening this area is a priority for Brendan Rodgers heading into next season.

Celtic’s midfield, where Engels was supposed to make an impact, and the left centre-back role where Scales is still struggling, are two clear areas where improvements can be made for next season.
As much as the team pushed for a winner, the lack of control in midfield and defensive lapses once again proved costly. While the draw isn’t a disaster, Brendan Rodgers will undoubtedly look to strengthen these positions in the upcoming transfer window to ensure Celtic are more resilient in future derbies.
Arne Engels, at just 21, will only improve with time, but he has yet to deliver that standout Glasgow Derby performance Celtic supporters are desperately waiting to see.
