It’s a frustrating development for Brendan Rodgers, who is already without Johnston due to a hamstring issue, and now faces a defensive headache ahead of the club’s next Premiership outing.
With both senior options unavailable, 19-year-old Colby Donovan is expected to step in. The young full-back was on the verge of sealing a loan move to Dundee before Johnston’s injury forced Celtic to pull the plug and keep him as cover.
Donovan has impressed in brief cameos and now looks set for a proper run-out in the senior side. A composed operator with good energy, this will be a significant opportunity for the academy graduate to stake his claim for more regular minutes.
It’s not an ideal scenario for Celtic given the mounting injuries, but it may just be the break Donovan needs to show he can handle the pressure at the top level.
