Celtic invincible Dedryck Boyata has become a free agent after being released by Belgian side Club Brugge.
The central defender was banished from the first team and forced to train with the reserves and academy players after it was revealed that he cost the club £190,000 for every game he played (Glasgow Times).
Boyata, therefore, hadn’t turned out for Brugge for just under a year until he was released over the weekend.
He didn’t feature on the pitch in his side’s UEFA Champions League clash with Celtic in November, although he did come on at the break to carry out the traditional half-time draw at Parkhead.
The now 34-year-old made 135 Hoops appearances across a four-year spell in Glasgow. He left on a free for Hertha Berlin in 2019.
Now a free agent, it remains to be seen what lies ahead for Boyata.
He hasn’t played regular senior football in almost a year, and given his age, clubs may find taking the risk on his services too high.
His experience is coherent, though. Boyata came through at Manchester City and won several major trophies with Celtic, as well as, at one point, being a regular Belgian international.
Having recently recalled Dane Murray from his Queen’s Park loan, the Hoops aren’t in need of any centre-back additions, as much as Boyata’s experience might prove handy.
Bring him home 😜
