If you’re a Celtic fan you will have probably heard this at some point from an English based journalist or former EPL player; Celtic is huge but… and then you get a whole host of reasons why one of their top players should leave or in this instance the manager.

It’s a patronising caveat that comes as standard with the EPL fan boys who think football starts and ends in England.

All the reasons we get for players and managers leaving boil down to one thing, and that’s money. Rarely do you hear of a player taking a direct step up in club when they leave Celtic Park. They go to a league with better players in it and get paid more money to sit mid-table, some better, some worse.

The notion the Leicester move would be a great one for Brendan Rodgers boils down to the money he could earn as well as the transfer budget he could wield. It’s all relative in the EPL though, and with a bigger budget, you’re shopping in a market where James Maddison was deemed to be worth €25million so how far is your kitty really going to get you.

Having managed Liverpool and been a Stevie Gerrard slip away from winning the title, and now coming to Celtic to preside over a dominant spell, to go to Leicester in a footballing sense would be a step-down. Cue the EPL fan bhoys with their ‘pub league’, ‘my nan patter’ etc.

Right now, you have a Celtic fan, with Celtic roots on a mission for a historic achievement of ten in a row, breaking record along the way. For Rodgers to leave in the summer for the Foxes job would be a horrible indictment of Peter Lawwell, unable to keep a top manager who is a Celtic fan would be a massive blemish on his ability as a chief executive.

Brendan Rodgers has made a lot of money in his career to date and is on good money at Celtic – presumably when he signed his deal the plan was to aim for ten in a row before riding off into the sunset. You can’t take anything for granted at Celtic, but one thing Brendan Rodgers should keep in mind is.

Celtic is a huge club.

  1. Celtic are a big fish in a ever decreasing pond. If they escape this league set up, they would be a fish in a bigger pond and would become a big fish again. All in the future. The other pond are in the wings waiting on their call.
