Celtic are keeping their eyes peeled, with European giants Real Madrid reportedly monitoring ex-Hoops full-back Jeremie Frimpong.
The talented young right-back left the hoops at the beginning of 2021 for Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.
Frimpong came to Celtic from Man City a year and a half before as somewhat of an unknown quantity, but he progressively developed during his time at the club enough to warrant a move away for £11.5m.
Since making the switch to Germany, the 23-year-old has gone from strength to strength. Under the stewardship of Xabi Alonso, Frimpong was key last season as Leverkusen won an invincible double in Germany.
The Dutchman has established himself as one of the best up-and-coming right-sided full-backs in world football, and the wealth of transfer interest in him comes as no surprise.
Frimpong has previously been linked with numerous big clubs, Real Madrid being the latest.
German journalist Florian Plettenberg reports on X that the Spanish giants are monitoring the ex-Celt’s situation before a possible move next summer.
Frimpong’s Leverkusen release clause, which runs until 2028, is €40m. Celtic are due 30% of any future sale of the player [Football Scotland], meaning they could net a hefty sum next year if the right-back departs the BayArena.Â
Madrid Move Would Be Deserved
A switch to arguably the biggest club in world football would exemplify Frimpong’s fleeting rise over the past five years.
While he has seriously developed out in Germany, Celtic really put the Netherlands international on the map by giving him his first taste of senior football.
Half a decade after his Hoops debut, a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu would be nothing but deserved for a player who seemingly takes everything in his stride.
As Frimpong’s future is decided, Celtic will watch on with ultimate anticipation over the upcoming months, hoping for a healthy financial pay-day.
