Former Celtic striker Kenny Dalglish has backed the clubs decision not to have allowed any players to leave on international duty unless they are going to the World Cup.

It was revealed last week that Ange Postecoglou would not be allowing any of his star players to join up with their national teams much to the annoyance of some international bosses.

Both Steve Clarke and Sweden boss Janne Andersson expressed their disappointment and not being able to select Celtic players with them hoping to use international friendlies as good preparation for UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying matches however the break has not been recognised as an official international break.

“A lot has been made about Celtic players not being made available for Scotland’s friendly in Turkey on Wednesday night,” said Dalglish speaking in the Sunday Post.

“I understand the stance taken by the Parkhead club. They’ve signed a contract to take a squad to Australia for a tournament, and they are taking their best players.

“It will also be a part of their preparation for the second-half of the campaign as they try to retain the title and get back into the Champions League.

“With this date not being officially recognised in the international calendar, Ange Postecoglou is perfectly within his rights.

“I’ve no doubt that had this been a competitive game – or preparation for going to the World Cup – then any Celtic player called up would be with their country.”

The Hoops have headed to Sydney to compete in the Sydney Super Cup to take on Everton and Sydney FC in a tournament which has been dubbed as Ange Postecoglou’s homecoming with their first match taking place on Thursday morning – Celtic Park time.

It will also serve as good preparation for the second part of the season as the Scottish champions look to come back even stronger after the World Cup break. They currently sit nine points clear at the top of the SPFL Premiership after extending their lead at the top of the table with a 2-1 victory over Ross County on Saturday.
