Ex Celtic goalkeeper Packie Bonner has continued his criticism for Hoops striker Albian Ajeti and his impact on the side.

In the last few weeks, Ajeti has been the only senior frontman at the club with injuries to both Kyogo Furuhashi and Georgios Giakoumakis.

On Sunday, though, he found himself coming off the bench in the final 20 minutes of the game as Ange Postecoglou and his side looked to find a winner, which eventually came through Jota.

As quoted by the Glasgow Times, Bonner remained unimpressed by the Swiss striker’s brief cameo on the park in the dying minutes of the crucial win at Pittodrie on Sunday.

He said: “Ajeti, I don’t think he touched the ball for the full period (he was on for). I don’t think he touched the ball once. He had one sort of wrestle with the centre-half, and that was it.

“Whether that was down to a lack of movement or whether that’s not Celtic getting balls into areas he can run onto, it’s incredible a striker for Celtic not touching the ball. I would love to see the stat on it.

“Again, I looked at Ajeti today upfront, and he’s just a completely different player than Kyogo. There was a couple of times Kyogo was looking for that little pass, that penetrating pass. There was one where McGregor got (close) that didn’t happen for him.

“The next McGregor tried him again. At least he’s threatening the back of centre-halves, whilst Ajeti is going on and just standing in front of them, making it easier for centre-halves.”

It would be harsh to critique the 24-year old’s performance on the day, considering the time he came on and the performances across the park, with many players not doing enough to create opportunities for the strikers.

However, it would be fair to say he hasn’t taken the opportunity to impress whilst Kyogo was out injured and Giakoumakis continues to build up his fitness. Bonner has undoubtedly looked to make that point on several occasions now.

This international break could be a big one for the Greek striker, who will improve his fitness while other players are on international duty.

So, it is up to Ajeti to prove himself when he comes back from his time away with the Swiss national side.

  1. It’s time to get rid of ajeti, he is slow and lazy and has shown nothing to keep on persevering with him, just take the hit and sell him. I said when we bought him he was useless and all he has done is prove it.
