Former Celtic manager and Parkhead legend was quick to rule out any sort of return to Celtic as the Hoops look for a new manager.

O’Neill’s name had been bandied about for months, even when Neil Lennon was still in the job because of his close ties with the Hoops.

Earlier in the season, I think many fans thought O’Neill coming in to steady the ship might be a decent idea but I’ve never seen a groundswell for his full time return.

If you lived through the O’Neill era, you would not want him to return in a capacity and ultimately fail. Football has moved on and O’Neill’s short sting at Forest proved it.

Speaking on Sky Sports and cited by the Scotsman, O’Neill ruled himself out of the job while touting his former Ireland assistant manager, Roy Keane.

“I’ve had a great time here but my time is gone. The torch has been passed and it’s up to other people now.

“My own personal view is that owners and chief executives are missing a trick by not thinking about Roy as their manager.

“That is my view. He has learned a great deal and he is very capable of taking a top job.”

Like O’Neill, there’s no large appetite for Roy Kean to be handed the keys to Celtic Park. The Manchester Utd legend hasn’t managed in over ten years and has not been successful in any roles he’s been in for the most part.

His demeanour and perceived lack of patience with underperformers is also a major red flag.
