Celtic have been linked with a summer move for Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi.

The Nigerian frontman signed for Liverpool in 2015 but has never played a game for the club due to work permit issues.

Awoniyi is currently on loan at Union Berlin and has spent his Anfield career so far out on loan to FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Excelsior Mouscron, Gent, Mainz and now Union Berlin.

Work permit problems means he might never get to play for Liverpool. However, the 23-year-old remains hopeful that something can be done:

“Liverpool will always be the priority for me and I am grateful to everyone at the club,” said Awoniyi. “I still don’t have the work permit to play in England. But with the new rules in place, and the minutes I have played in Germany this season, no one knows what the future will hold regarding the UK work permit.” Awoniyi told World Soccer.

“Presently, I am still a Liverpool player until the last day of my contract, but no one knows what the future holds. My dream has always been to play in the Premier League and it’s why I signed for Liverpool. I still keep the dream alive but if leaving will facilitate it, why not? At the moment, it is impossible to say what might happen in the future,”

90min reported both Celtic and their Glasgow rivals are interested in the forward. But any club in the UK is likely to come up against the same work permit issues as Liverpool have to date.

Celtic’s plans is to utilise the European market still and navigate through the minefield of Brexit to get deals done.

However, signing a Nigerian striker yet to play a game in this country might be a bridge too far. Celtic are going to need a goal scorer come the end of the season.

  1. A keeper keeper. A sweeper, A centre mid built like Kris Ajer and a midfield shuffle, another bulky hitman like Mr Edd. And everybody else loans or biscuit tins. Celtic board can afford a new manager and their coaching staff too. So get it in place before next season. Like now. Don’t want sevco/rifc doing two in a row.
