Celtic edged 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership at the weekend although a lot of that was not down to their own exploits.

Instead, Hoops loanee Liam Scales made his contribution to his parent club’s title push with what was an utter wonder goal in Aberdeen’s 2-0 victory over Rangers.

It didn’t work out for the Irishman in his first year in Glasgow thus he was sent out to Pittodrie on loan for the 2022/23 season, a spell in which so far, he has excelled.

Scales has made 35 appearances across all competitions for the Dons so far this campaign and particularly stood out on Sunday.

His teammate Mattie Pollock has recognised this, being full of praise for the 24 year old when speaking to the Red Matchday Programme:

“Scalesy is class. What a lad, on and off the pitch, he’s a very good mate of mine. He probably doesn’t get the recognition he deserves because he’s been absolutely phenomenal.

“He’s obviously had to go through the rocky spell when the team was conceding goals and then come out the other side, and it shows the character he has to be able to do that, because everyone looks at the defenders first when the goals are going in.

“He’s solid, quick, strong, wins the ball in the air and is good on the ball too. I think he’s the full package and has been very good for us.”

This is rather high praise for Scales which is vastly impressive.

Albeit what Pollock is saying may be slightly biased because he is a teammate of Scales however he does see what the Irishman does every in training and in games therefore has decent knowledge of his ability.

It will be intriguing to see what happens with Scales this summer.

It didn’t work out for him in his maiden year in Glasgow but loan spells can work wonders for certain players a la Ryan Christie.

Nevertheless, the competition for places in the Celtic team right now is as high as its ever been thus it may be rather difficult for the Irishman to challenge next season.
