BRENDAN RODGERS couldn’t give Celtic fans a timeframe for the return of Leigh Griffiths even though the manager admitted the player was coming out the other end of his calf injury problems.

The striker has been sidelined since before the October international break where he was going to use the time off to work on his general fitness and weight.

However, a calf injury curtailed those plans and the striker’s fitness has obviously taken a greater hit since.

A mystery illness also played its part in Leigh’s recovery and the Celtic manager wants to make clear there is no proper timetable for his return to the squad.

The very least the Celtic manager asks of his players is for them to be as fit as possible.

He demands they put the work in for the fans and he won’t put anyone out there who isn’t putting the work in.

Leigh has the opportunity to get back on the training field within the next week where he will have to prove he’s up for the challenge.

Speaking about his striker Rodgers said: “I’m not sure. That will depend on Leigh, how quickly he responds to treatment and how hard he works to get fit.

“He’s getting better and his calf injury is coming towards its end.

“He’s not on the playing field yet but he’s working with the medical team and the sports science team to get at it as quick as he possibly can.”
