NIR BITTON has come out swinging when it comes to his critics – many of them Celtic fans who haven’t been over enamoured with the Israeli for a long time.

The midfielder turned defender doesn’t have to look hard to find negative comments about him – but he says he’s learned to cut out the noise.

Nir accepts there are just some people who he won’t convince this deep into his Celtic run but is still confident in his own ability as a player.

“I don’t listen to the noise outside. I trust my ability and know who I am. A lot of times I think people judge me in the wrong way because I signed for Celtic as a midfielder. The fact is, I have played a lot of games in defence and I’m fine with that.” Bitton told SunSport.

“I have watched a lot of games where top defenders make mistakes. All of them. There isn’t one defender who doesn’t make mistakes. But if I make a mistake people say, ‘It’s because he’s not a defender’. That’s why I don’t listen to the crowd and I don’t listen to the noise outside.

“I think, with me, a lot of people are biased. They have their opinion of me and want to stick to that no matter what. They don’t need any excuse to make comment on me. I know when I have played a good game or played a bad game.”

Bitton is quite right to defend himself from criticism, however, he has had some shockers and the red card last season at Ibrox and then another in a Champions League qualifier this season are reasons many people call him a liability.

There are three things certain in life; death, taxes and Nir Bitton starting pivotal Celtic Champions League qualifiers because we always fail to prepare.

Bitton is a utility man, someone who can slot in and do a job but he should only be considered a squad player for Celtic and not a first team starter.

As soon as we are that short we have to rely on the Israeli – it means the club have yet again failed to prepare.

  1. Big Bitton has been a loyal player to Celtic for years without complaining about being in or out the team. Most Celtic fans realise he is a midfielder not a defender and we have seen many a great performance for the club in our 9 in a row seasons. Fans should get off his back he is pure class.
