It has been revealed today by Ange Postecoglou that James McCarthy is out with a ‘significant hamstring injury’ [PLZ Soccer].

Since his arrival at Celtic last summer, the former Crystal Palace midfielder is yet to have made too much of an impact in the Hoops and be used as a bit part player under Postecoglou.

The 31-year old has made a total of five appearances so far this season for the Scottish Champions having most recently came off the bench in the 6-1 victory over Hibs at Celtic Park.

With the Hoops only having two games to play before domestic football pauses for the World Cup, this won’t be too much of a concern but it is unknown the length of time McCarthy will be out for.

McCarthy’s highlight moment of the season so far came in the dramatic late 2-1 victory at McDiarmid park when he made sure to get to the ball to give it to Alexandro Bernabei before picking out Giakoumakis in the box to send Hoops fans crazy.

8th October 2022; McDiarmid Park, Perth, Scotland; Scottish premier league football, St Johnstone versus Celtic: Giorgos Giakoumakis of Celtic makes it 2-1 to Celtic in the 95th minute of the match

A lengthy injury could spell the end of McCarthy’s career at Celtic with it being stated that the club were open to offers for the Republic of Ireland international during the summer window.
