I’m not the type of fan to go in and demand Celtic spend top dollar on players and I air on the side of caution even when it comes to spending Celtic’s money in my head. However, since January I’ve been keeping close tabs on one of Celtic’s top winter targets and I have to say I’m impressed!

Castagne was on Celtic’s radar in the January window but a move failed to materialise with Atalanta looking for a lot of money to hand the defender over.

In the first half of the season, Castagne was used sparingly prompting the player to consider his future in January. Since then the defender has played more often than not for the Serie A side and has played at right back, left back and even to the right of midfield.

Contrary to what Transfermarkt.com reports, the player is tied into Atalanta for two more years with the club taking up the option of an extra year so he wouldn’t be entering the last year of his contract in June.

This means Celtic would still have to pay top dollar for the defender but it would be worth every penny! Speaking back in January and reported by RecordSport, the Belgian certainly didn’t rule out a move to Celtic with these quotes.

“Let’s see what happens in the summer. I certainly won’t be ruling out a departure from Atalanta then.”

“If I do go, it would have to be a team that plays in the Champions League and for a club that goes every year for the title.

“If Atalanta have the same goals and gets to play European football, then maybe I will stay here.”

Celtic can offer both things he’s looking for potentially.

While it would take upwards of €9million to land Castagne, breaking our transfer record fee for a defender who could easily double in value over two years should be a priority.

AC Milan are said to be interested in the defender now according to CalcioMercatio which means Celtic would have to roll out the red carpet.
