CHRIS SUTTON believes that the role Scott Brown played in the Celtic side hasn’t been filled, and Postecoglou must identify a player to fill the enforcer role.
The Celtic legend, who now manages Fleetwood Town, called an end to his Celtic career in the summer of 2021, announcing he’d join Aberdeen to take up a player/coach role.
Callum McGregor has taken the captain’s armband and has excelled in his new job in the squad. The current captain has also adjusted his position, playing as a holding midfielder where Scott Brown would normally position himself. Despite some fans believing that he’s better when he’s playing further up the pitch, the Scotland internationalist has been terrific in linking the defence to the attack.
However, Sutton is pushing for Ange Postecoglou to find a player who will dominate the midfield, as Brown did, and sign him this summer, especially with Champions League group stages on the horizon.
The former Celtic striker wrote in the Daily Record;
‘In my Celtic days it was Neil Lennon.
‘Subsequently, it was the likes of Scott Brown and Victor Wanyama who did the job.
‘It takes different pieces to fit a puzzle and, for all Celtic’s attacking quality, Ange Postecoglou will be aware you need balance.
‘And I’m convinced the Hoops could do with getting an enforcer in the door.
‘Not just for stepping up the levels to enter the heights of the Champions League group stages but to help on the home front, too.’
Every great European club has a holding midfielder than can be physical, as good as CalMac is, he’ll never have the physicality to do so. It’s definitely an area that Ange should look to improve.
McGregor’s best when played in the middle of the park, not quite a defensive Midfielder, but not quite an attacking Midfielder either, he’s a playmaker who is suited at assisting the Defensive Mid, and likewise in assisting the attacking Mids, Wingers, Forwards.
