Ireland International James McCarthy made his long awaited return to the football pitch at the weekend when he ran out for the Everton under 23s against Manchester City.

The former Celtic target has been out for 9-months after suffering a horrific leg break against West Brom back in January of this year.

Last summer, McCarthy was heavily linked with a loan move to his bhoyhood heroes Celtic with reports suggesting Celtic had made tentative enquiries about the midfielder.

The Irish international has struggled with injuries but since leaving for England the star has made 222 Premier League appearances between Wigan and Everton.

Everton bought the star from Wigan for £14million back in 2013.

Since McCarthy has been out Everton have had Sam Allardyce as manager and now Marco Silva in charge.

It’s unclear if Silva has James in his plans.

If the player can prove his fitness and he isn’t going to feature at Goodison Park, could it be time to bring the young lad back home?

The former Hamilton star has a contract until 2020 and is on a decent wage, a loan deal with an option to buy could be perfect in January.
