Former Celtic defender Filip Benkovic has been released from his Cardiff loan and is now heading back to his parent club, Leicester.

The Croatian has not got the game time he expected and Leciester have been keen to get him proper first team football in order to get the best of the player.

Celtic are in the market for a centre-back and if the club are paying attention, it would be a no brainer to bring the player back for the second half of the season.

If the defender can stay fit, he would be a massive asset to the club during the second half of the season.

Anyone against re-signing former players because it’s a ‘backwards step’ only have to look at our centre back situation to realise Filip could do well again.

He’s still a young player with a point to prove and Brendan Rodgers knows he’ll get the game time at Celtic to prove himself.

Over to you Celtic.

  1. I reckon Leicester may cut their losses and sell him and put the money to better use in their second string. If ping pong O’chandra, the player and his agent are OK to loan deals. Why not, but the Hoops will have to get someone else in too, to replace him or any other centre back if injured. As up until now, that has been the Hoops main achilles heel. That and they are shi7e at the back at cross box aerial tussles. Need Boli back or any centreback of Bobo’ish square headed dimentions .

  2. I think there always has to be an option to buy on these loan deal.
There may be the extreme exception, but if there is no option to buy on a loan the player spends half the season being in, especially if there are cultural and/or linguistic problems, then at the end of the season he’s back of to his parents club and we’re back to square one.
People keep harping on about Paddy Roberts, but let’s be frank, he couldn’t get out the door fast enough, big Fraser Foster was much the same.
Don’t get me wrong, they love being at CP, but it’s like a bucket list thing to play at Paradise. It’s a fantastic experience (maybe not at the mo) but the cash and profile just aren’t there, it’s as simple as that.
