The Celtic Women could make history this afternoon by qualifying for the Champions League.

Women’s football is growing and the new Champions League setup means the financial incentive to qualify is huge for clubs.

Glasgow City have had it their own way for so long, being the only full time club in the league, they’ve romped to title after title over the past 13 seasons.

This season was Celtic’s first every full-time, professional season and they have surpassed expectations to this point.

Glasgow City’s dominance and Rangers Women’s funding had many pundits claiming Celtic were the third horse in a two horse race this term.

Since coming out of Lockdown, Fran Alonso and his team have been on a mission to prove the doubters wrong. They can put the finishing touches to a fantastic season by beating Motherwell and claiming second spot and that all-important Champions League place.

However, there is a sub-plot at play!

If Rangers Women were to beat Glasgow City today then Celtic could clinch the title.

City only need a draw to make sure of the trophy but a defeat would mean Celtic just need to best Glasgow’s goal difference. The Hoops winning by three clear goals would be the perfect scenario.

On the flip side of things – if Celtic lose today and Rangers Women win against Glasgow City, the ghirls would miss out on a Champions League spot.

It’s high stakes and it’s live on the BBC Sport Scotland website. All games kick off at 16:10 this afternoon.
