It was The Athletic who broke the news about Celtic turning down two big money offers for Kristoffer Ajer.

We all know the story – Kris wants to leave this summer and pursue the next step in his career. The defender is in the final year of his contract and won’t fetch as much money as we could have got if he had more time left on his Parkhead deal.

Ajer has made it clear he wants to go and he’s happy to leave for a decent fee and not see out his contract. The player’s thought is to allow Celtic to get cash for him now to help build a new side. However, if Celtic have knocked back two £10m bids – a fee the Ajer camp believe is fair under the circumstances, things could turn sour.

Ajer wanted to leave after nine in a row, he was asked to stay for the ten tilt which blew up in our faces. While he has said he wants to provide the club with a transfer fee and not see out his contract and go for free, if Kris doesn’t get his preferred move – we could be looking at a disgruntled player who will sit and see out his deal.

The scenario of Ajer staying helps nobody. The Norwegian can get a massive signing on bonus if he waits six months and signs a deal with any club who wants him, Celtic would get nothing.

£10m seems like a fair price, what are Celtic holding out for? It’s a dangerous game to play.
