Celtic’s latest trip to Ibrox was never going to be short on drama, and this Scottish Cup quarter-final delivered plenty of it.

By the end of a bruising afternoon in Govan, Martin O’Neill’s side were through to the semi-finals after a 4-2 penalty shootout win, but the route there was anything but straightforward. After 120 goalless minutes, Celtic had to show resilience, patience and nerve to get the job done. 

The game itself was a hard watch at times from a Celtic point of view. Rangers had more of the ball, carried more threat and created the better openings across the afternoon. Sky Sports’ match stats credited the home side with 24 shots to Celtic’s one, underlining just how much pressure the visitors had to absorb. 

That did not mean Celtic were without their moments. Daizen Maeda thought he had given the visitors the lead in the first half, only for the effort to be ruled out after a VAR review for offside in the build-up.

As the game wore on, Celtic’s defensive effort became the story. Viljami Sinisalo made key interventions, while those in front of him dug in and kept Rangers out. It was not flashy and it was not dominant, but it was committed. Celtic stayed alive in the tie and gave themselves the platform to take it all the way. 

Extra time came and went without a goal, which left the quarter-final to be settled from 12 yards. That is where Celtic found their composure. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Auston Trusty, Reo Hatate and Tomas Cvancara all scored, while Rangers missed through James Tavernier and Djeidi Gassama. Cvancara’s penalty sent Celtic through and sparked scenes of celebration at the away end. 

This was not one of those days built around flowing football or complete control. It was about surviving a difficult tie away from home with half a squad missing, including our captain Callum McGregior, taking the punches and still finding a way to win. Those victories can sometimes say just as much about a side as the stylish ones.
