CELTIC have released a statement this evening joining the SPFL in sending a message to the Scottish government.

The SPFL have again contacted the First Minister to have them reconsider the fan lockout north of the border. The current restrictions mean very few places in Scotland can host fans, even a small, safe amount. The support is vital to so many clubs up and down the country and the longer they’re locked out, the more peril clubs in Scotland will be of financial disaster.

As a five day COVID amnesty is called during the Christmas period where the rules are severely relaxed, why can’t football fans go in small numbers to football games in an open-air venue?

The Scottish government have not given Scottish football much scope in that regard, they seem to be of the opinion the game has been done a major favour by being allowed to continue in its current form.

Celtic put their weight behind the SPFL move to again ask the question of the government.

Celtic FC understands that COVID-19 presents significant challenges for people, businesses and sectors across Scotland, including football, and that responding to those challenges whilst protecting health and safety will involve striking a difficult balance of a number of factors and considerations.

As we have made clear, the Club is committed to working with the football authorities and the Scottish Government to welcome supporters back to football as quickly and as safely as possible. From the work that we have carried out with our supporters, we know how important that is to them, too.

We therefore fully support the SPFL’s request for an urgent meeting with the First Minister to discuss the safe return of supporters to stadia in Scotland as soon as possible.

The SPFL’s request and statement can be seen below.

  1. The board wants to be careful, if things don’t drastically improve on and off the field a lot of supporters will not be turning up.
