Former Celtic star and Hibernian manager, Alan Stubbs alluded to Celtic and Odsonne Edouard having a verbal agreement to let the player go last summer which the club reneged on.

Speaking about the striker’s form this year, Stubbs says there’s no doubt in his mind there has been a major drop off in effort from the previous seasons when it comes to the Frenchman.

The former defender speculated Eddie was merely playing out the season making sure he didn’t pick up a bad injury so he can get a move elsewhere this summer.

“This saga has dragged on since last summer” Stubbs told the Huddle Podcast.

“This was public that Edouard wanted to leave, he had a verbal agreement that he would be allowed to go if a club offered ‘X’ amount of money”

“Obviously he’s not been happy with that because he feels the club have gone back on what was spoken, whatever was said”

“You can tell some players when they don’t look interested, then they turn it on in a flash, you see it.

“Edouard has just looked not interested whatsoever, it looked like damage limitation for him this season to not get injured”

From our perspective, you always hear rumours about verbal agreements and it’s something that did come up with Moussa Dembele and Brendan Rodgers when they were both at the club.

However, we have heard nothing to suggest there was an agreement in place to sell Eddy last summer.

Celtic would have likely sold the frontman if they got their asking price which was £30m+ due to Eddy having two-years on his deal last term.

The club will now look to sell to get some kind of return on their investment.

It was John McGarry on the same podcast who claimed Brendan Rodgers is still keen on bringing his former £9m man to the English Premier League.

The journalist said:

“THERE ARE ENOUGH CLUBS INTERESTED IN HIM [Edouard], THAT CELTIC WILL STILL GET A REASONABLE FEE. SOMETHING IN THE NORTH OF £20M

“OBVIOUSLY, THEY OUTLAYED HALF OF THAT TO PSG WHEN HE SIGNED AND THERE’S STILL QUITE A BIG SELL-ON CLAUSE. IT WOULDN’T LEAVE AN ENORMOUS PROFIT BUT IT WOULD STILL ALLOW THEM TO CONSIDER IT TO BE A GOOD DEAL OVER THE PIECE.

“FROM WHAT I’M TOLD, I THINK LEICESTER ARE STILL THE KEENEST OF ALL THE CLUBS. ROMA ARE WELL IN THE MIX AS WELL.

“THERE ARE A NUMBER OF GERMAN AND ENGLISH TEAMS WHO ARE INTERESTED BUT I THINK LEICESTER, WITH THE OBVIOUS CONNECTION TO RODGERS, WOULD BE THE FAVOURED DESTINATION AT THE MOMENT”

Hopefully, Dominic McKay can get top dollar for the striker.

We need as much money in the coffers as possible because while he might not have been at his best this season, it’s going to take a lot to replace Odsonne.

  1. There’s no doubting Eddy’s ability but the way he tries to beat every defender b4 inevitably losing possession means he wont be missed at all.
Not been interested all season, remember early on in the season, he told Lennon he wasnt ready to play but he was always ok for the French u21s.
Any decent striker will score 30+ goals in a season for Celtic

  2. I don’t care what Edouard was supposedly promised…he knows tens of thousands of Celtic coughed up for season books and moe, despite being locked out of the stadium. His attitude had been a disgrace and i cant wait to see him out the door tbh.
He’s fucked the fans over big time, and for that he’s a nobody.
