CELTIC have been linked with a permanent move for Sligo Rovers defender John Mahon with reports claiming the bhoys have been scouting the Irishman for the past year.

Mahon, 19, has 18-months left on his current deal and has been watched by a number of clubs this season.

Celtic are in the market for a centre-back in the summer with Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic both leaving the club at the end of the season.

Jozo Simunovic and Kristoffer Ajer will be Celtic’s first choice defenders for any Euro qualifiers if the bhoys don’t step up their chase soon.

If one, or two of those players get injured, Celtic would be in a situation where they would need to field Marvin Compper and Jack Hendry.

Mahon has a lot of potential, but is he another project rather than someone who can slot straight into the team. Celtic need to spend some serious cash to replace Filip and Dedryck.
