Over 18 months ago, the world was taken by storm by a relatively unknown virus. Leaders of countries ordered national lockdowns to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 after growing anxious about how deadly this virus could be.

While the whole world came to a standstill, the Celtic Foundation identified that families were going to struggle to make ends meet throughout the lockdowns and stepped in to help.

The Football For Good Fund has now raised over a whopping £1.5 million to help those hardest hit by the pandemic. The staggering figure couldn’t be achieved without the support of the club’s amazing fans. The foundations added a quarter of a million pounds to reach the milestone.

All money raised has been used to supports nearly 4,000 vulnerable children, 25,000 families, almost 16,000 pensioners and 13,000 homeless people.

Celtic catered 11,000 hot meals and 17,000 hot drinks to frontline NHS staff while they fought the virus.

The aid hasn’t stopped at the Glasgow border, partnering with other organisations, the fund has helped those across Scotland as well as London and Ireland. Celtic have even supplied international aid.

After the announcement, Tony Hamilton spoke to the club’s website and said;

“We’re all looking forward to getting our lives back to where we were pre-pandemic. However, that’s not an instant fix for any of us, and the legacy of what we’ve all endured will take much longer to recover from.

“I’m delighted we’re in a position to continue with our Football For Good Fund for the remainder of 2021 in the first instance. I’m very grateful to everyone who has facilitated this, including Celtic supporters in every corner of the globe, our corporate and institutional funders, the Foundation’s Trustees, and everyone at the football club who has offered support.

“The next few months will see real hardship for many families and individuals within our communities. The fact that additional benefit support through COVID is ending, coupled with the rising costs of domestic fuel prices will have a major impact and it’s important that we continue to address these issues as best we can.”
