LEIGH GRIFFITHS will NOT join the rest of his teammates this week for the club’s pre-season tour of France after a Celtic spokesperson told RecordSport the player would head back to Lennoxtown to undergo his own training regime.

The news is that Leigh has reported back from the shutdown over his ideal playing weight and in need of serious conditioning before the season starts.

This was the same at the start of last season when Neil Lennon brought the striker back into the fold after a lengthy absence due to mental health issues.

“Leigh is undertaking his own fitness programme along with some other players at Lennoxtown and will team up with the squad when they return from France.” a club spokesperson told Recordsport.

This will be a blow for the striker who was getting back to a good form before the shutdown came into play.

Footballers being idle for three months isn’t going to be conducive to fitness or sharpness but the players were put on specific training routines to do at home.

The news that Leigh will not be joining the players will throw up the issue of the striker’s long term future at the club.

For what we can see, Leigh is really a player who needs games to get fitter and sharper, simply training itself seems to be problematic for the player.

We’re not in the business of looking to bring any of our players down and it will be good to get clarity from Neil Lennon over the situation in the coming days. We have also approached the club for comment.
