Having impressed the whole of Europe with their performance in Munich on Tuesday night, one Celtic star has been named in UEFA’s Champions League Team of the Week.

With Nicolas Kühn scoring against his former side Bayern Munich at the Allianz, surprisingly, it wasn’t the German winger who was named in the team. Instead, it was another player who stood out against Vincent Kompany’s side.

The player in the Team of the Week was, of course, Kasper Schmeichel, who won the Player of the Match award in the game with nine saves. Bayern Munich had an expected goals (xG) of 2.5, meaning Schmeichel hugely overperformed on the night.

It’s no surprise the Dane was part of the Team of the Week. He has rarely put a foot wrong for the Hoops since joining in the summer and, particularly in the Champions League, has stepped up to a level reminiscent of Fraser Forster with his ability to keep Celtic in games at crucial moments.

With his father in attendance at the game, Schmeichel did him proud. Peter Schmeichel is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers ever, Kasper is undeniably world-class himself—an impressive feat considering the pressure he has faced throughout his career in following in his father’s footsteps as a keeper.

For Schmeichel, it’s a great achievement; however, he would have rather progressed to the last 16, with the Dane describing the manner of Celtic’s exit as cruel on social media.
