Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has come out in support of manager Neil Lennon telling disgruntled supporters they have ‘short memories’ regarding the club’s success under the Northern Irishman.

As quoted by the Daily Record, the Celtic number nine and Scotland international has told supporters to remember what the likes of Lennon and Peter Lawwell have done for the club, winning several trophies over the years and that they should stick by them through this tough spell.

“There has been talk about the manager’s position and also Mr Lawwell’s position too.

“But you need to remember what these guys have done for the club. Fans quickly forget what those two have done for the club.

“The gaffer has won five out of six (trophies) since he came back, Mr Lawwell has won the last nine domestic league titles and guided us to a quadruple treble.

“I’m sure the manager has had assurances from Mr Lawwell and Mr Desmond, who he will be in regular contact with. If anything was to have happened on that front I’m sure we’d have been the first to know.

“We want him to stay for as long as possible because we feel he is still the right man for the job. The fans are hurting more than any of us.

“The fans support us and we all love them, we want them back in the stadium as soon as possible so they can cheer us on. It’s up to us players to put that right.”

Despite previous success over the last few years, that doesn’t excuse the dreadful form that Neil Lennon’s side have been on this season.

We currently find ourselves 23 points behind in the league and all but out of the title race in the middle of January.

For a club like Celtic, this is simply unacceptable and can’t be deemed as such, which is what seems to be going on at the moment.

The trophies and success has been so enjoyable for supporters over the years but the time for change is now after seeing the standards drop incredibly low this season.

  1. Sorry Leigh I have been one who got behind you but maybe you should have done more for Lennon instead of losing your fitness. What an absolute shambles of a season. Lawwell wanted a cheating club like rangers international football club back for his financial gain well he got it.
