Celtic’s pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa League clash with Red Star Belgrade took a light-hearted turn when winger Benjamin Nygren was asked a cheeky question referencing Rangers’ struggles.
The Ibrox club are still searching for their first league win under Russell Martin and currently sit 11th in the Premiership table. It has been a nightmare start for the new boss, who has faced mounting criticism for both results and performances.
Martin recently took his squad on a bonding trip that involved a swim in Loch Lomond followed by a group hill walk. The exercise quickly became a running joke among rival supporters, and it seems the humour has now spilled over into Celtic’s media duties.
At Tuesday’s press conference, a TNT Sports reporter delivered the line that had the whole room chuckling:
“What have you been doing to try and improve? Is it a case of time, getting to know each other… have you been any walks up any hills?”
The question was put directly to Nygren, who couldn’t help but burst out laughing before attempting to compose himself. The laughter wasn’t confined to the player either, with several reporters and club staff also cracking up at the well-timed dig.
It was a rare moment of levity in what has been a tense few weeks around Celtic Park. And while Celtic focus on Europe, their rivals across the city continue to provide plenty of entertainment off the pitch.
