CELTIC STAR Dedryck Boyata has been made a bit of a scapegoat after Belgium’s amazing collapse against Switzerland.

The defender started alongside Vincent Kompany and Toby Alderweireld for the second time in a week with the trio fairing well against Iceland.

It was all going so well for Roberto Martinez and his player’s until a second-half hattrick by Haris Seferovic stunned the Belgium team.

The game ended 5-2 to Switzerland with Belgium winning 2-0 at one point in the match.

Boyata has been deputising in the absence of Spurs defender, Jan Vertonghen and had been gaining plaudits for his international side.

However, after just one bad result he is being used as a scapegoat by many Belgium fans who don’t want to criticise long time captain Vincent Kompany or Toby Alderweireld.

Collectively, the Belgium defending in the second half was nothing short of woeful, and Boyata has to and will take some of the blame for that but some of the vitriol he has received on social media over the past 12 hours has been very poor.

We can only hope the defender takes this frustration into Celtic’s next eleven games and shows everyone exactly what he can do.

Boyata is out of contract in the summer and is yet to sign a new deal with Celtic. As we go into the January window in just over a month – it could make or break time for the double treble star.
