NEIL LENNON has praised the work of Nir Bitton after the player helped Celtic through yet another defensive injury crisis where he not only stepped in at centre-back but excelled in the position as of late.

The Celtic boss brought Nir to the club during his first stint as Celtic boss and the manager now speaks of the player’s maturity in the game.

Celtic’s win at Ibrox was no fluke and neither was their clean sheet with Bitton being a part of that until he sadly came off injured for the final 30 minutes.

The Israeli has only a year remaining on his current Celtic deal but Neil Lennon told CelticTV he and the club are aware of Nir’s situation and will look to sign the midfielder/defender to a new deal.

“I was delighted with the way he was playing, he’s been outstanding whether he has played in midfield or at centre-half.

“Sometimes he can be a bit too composed! But from what I’ve seen of him lately, he’s been absolutely superb.

“There’s a maturity about him as well that has pleased me.

“Obviously we know about his contract situation and that’s something we’ll be looking to change as we go along too.

“Hopefully we can get it sorted soon.”

The player will return to the first team squad in a couple of weeks once he gets over his injury. It will be interesting to see if Nir can get into the team when we’re at full strength. His versatility could land him his new deal.
