Less than six months after coming in from Manchester Utd and a couple of months removed from his first full Ireland cap, Lee O’Connor could be on the move this January.

According to Herald Scotland, Oxford Utd want to take the Celtic defender on loan for the rest of the season with the club apparently receptive to loaning the Irishman out.

O’Connor came with some buzz in the summer and was another young lad who looked like he could be lingering around the first team before too long. However, he’s had to make do with sporadic developmental games while he waits for his chance at Celtic.

A loan move could be beneficial for the lad and the likes of Luca Connell, Jonathan Afolabi among others but Oxford Utd would present a major drop in quality and experience needed to make it at Celtic.

It’s strange Celtic don’t seek a more SPFL centric approach like they did with Kristoffer Ajer at Kilmarnock a few years back. It was the making of him on the domestic front.

An SPFL side would have to show interest in these players of course but keeping them closer to to home would be beneficial in more ways that one.
