Celtic have named their first starting XI since the departure of Wilfried Nancy, and the message from Martin O’Neill is immediate and unmistakable.
Structure, familiarity, and a clear break from what came before.
For the visit of Dundee United to Celtic Park, O’Neill has reverted to a traditional back four, abandoning the experimental shape that defined Nancy’s brief and turbulent spell in charge.
It is a selection that feels grounded, almost conservative, but one clearly designed to steady a squad that has looked unsure of itself for weeks.
Kasper Schmeichel retains his place in goal, despite a torrid afternoon in last Sunday’s derby defeat and ongoing murmurs around his conditioning.
O’Neill’s call here is notable. It suggests trust in the Dane’s experience and leadership at a time when confidence across the side has been fragile.
The defensive line sees a significant change. Liam Scales comes back into the side, partnering Austin Trusty, with Julian Araujo and Kieran Tierney operating as orthodox full-backs. It is a return to roles these players know well, and that in itself feels like part of the reset.
Under Nancy, Celtic’s defenders were frequently asked to perform unfamiliar tasks, often looking caught between systems. Today’s back four strips that complexity away. Defend first. Keep it simple. Do the basics well.
In midfield, Callum McGregor captains the side once again and anchors a three that includes Reo Hatate and Arne Engels.
This unit is asked to control the tempo, something Celtic have struggled badly with during their recent run. The emphasis appears to be on balance rather than chaos, with McGregor given the platform to dictate from his natural zone.
Further forward, the selection also leans toward the familiar. Daizen Maeda leads the line, flanked by Yang Hyun-jun and Tounekti.

The bench reflects the reality of the squad right now. Johnny Kenny remains the only recognised striker option, while the likes of James Forrest and Anthony Ralston offer experience if required later in the game.
