Celtic are back in Premiership action this afternoon following the international break with a trip to Dens Park to face Dundee, and Martin O’Neill has named his Hoops starting XI.
The timing of this one matters. Results earlier in the weekend have tightened things at the top, and Celtic go into the game knowing they cannot afford to drop points if they want to stay in the race.
Dens Park is rarely straightforward. Dundee have already caused problems for Celtic this season, staying compact and making the game tight. They don’t leave much space between the lines, which means Celtic will need patience as much as quality.
The last outing at Tannadice before the international break showed a familiar pattern. Celtic started slowly, loose in possession and struggling to deal with pressure. When the tempo improved later in the game, they looked more controlled and began to create chances.
That’s the balance they need to find again. Move the ball quicker, avoid forcing passes, and pick the right moments in the final third. If the tempo drops, Dundee will settle into their shape.
Injury concerns haven’t gone away either. Julian Araujo remains out, while Alistair Johnston is still working his way back to full fitness after yet another injury setback. That leaves Celtic short on options at right-back, with Colby Donovan likely to play a key role if he is fit enough after his recent issue.
Wide areas could be key. If Celtic can stretch Dundee, it opens space inside for runners arriving late. Without that width, everything becomes congested and easier to defend.
Set pieces could also play a part. In games like this, one delivery or second ball can decide it.
