Johnny Kenny could leave Celtic on loan on Championship deadline day, with Bolton Wanderers keen to bring the striker back to the club.
Bolton were interested in Kenny last summer, but Celtic blocked a move as Brendan Rodgers was short of options in attack.
The striker eventually secured a loan move to the League One club in January and played a key role in their promotion push.
Bolton have since won promotion to the Championship and are keen to have Kenny back as they prepare for life in the second tier.
The English club made an approach earlier in the summer but were unable to reach an agreement with Celtic.
However, with the Championship transfer window closing tonight, Bolton could make another attempt to get a deal over the line.
SunSport reports that Bolton remain keen on bringing Kenny back to the club.
There is, however, a major complication from Celtic’s point of view.
Kasper Høgh and Callum Osmand are both currently dealing with injuries, leaving Martin O’Neill with fewer options in the forward positions.
Kenny is effectively fourth choice when everyone is fit, so allowing him to leave would make sense from a squad-management perspective.
But the situation could change depending on the severity of the injuries picked up by Høgh and Osmand.
Celtic will therefore have to weigh up the benefit of allowing Kenny to get regular Championship football against the risk of being left short in attack.
Kenny’s successful spell at Bolton means there is a clear desire from the Championship club to bring him back, while the striker could also benefit from another season playing regular first-team football.
The clock is now ticking, though.
The Championship transfer window closes at 11 pm tonight, Tuesday, September 1, meaning Bolton and Celtic have only hours to reach an agreement if Kenny is to return to the club.
