Islam Chesnokov hasn’t even arrived in the Scottish Premiership yet, but he’s already being linked with a potential move to Celtic down the line, and the suggestion comes from a familiar source across the city.

Former Rangers winger Andrei Kanchelskis believes the Kazakhstani forward’s decision to join Hearts is a smart step with a view to catching the eye of clubs like Celtic.

The Jambos have secured Chesnokov on a pre-contract and are now working to agree terms with FC Tobol to bring him in ahead of schedule.

Kanchelskis, who, is now managing in the Russian second tier with Dynamo Bryansk. He claims the Scottish top flight, despite being a smaller league, offers players a far greater chance of being noticed, particularly by Celtic, who he says are currently a cut above the rest.

The ex-Russia international also questioned why Chesnokov would choose to remain in his homeland when there’s little exposure or European football on offer compared to the opportunities in Scotland.

He said: (RecordSport), “The Scottish league is quite high level and there is a lot of quality there. It’s a very physical league. But the problem is this is only a league with two teams – Celtic and Rangers. And Celtic are leading by a wide margin.

“Another five or six, including Hearts, are fighting for places in the European competitions. But the main advantage for Islam Chesnokov of moving to Scotland is the opportunity to be noticed by Celtic or English clubs and eventually sign for them. This is an opportunity for progress.

“Yes, the level of the Russian Premier League is clearly higher than in Scotland, but there’s no Europe for him there and no one will notice him in Russia.

“So if it was me, I would have done what Islam did and moved to Scotland too.”

Hearts are reportedly continuing their push to get the deal done this summer to bolster their options in attack ahead of the new campaign.

Kanchelskis’ comments are unlikely to sit well with his former club’s support, but his assessment of Celtic’s position in Scottish football is difficult to ignore. Regular Champions League involvement and a reputation for developing and selling talent has made Parkhead a natural next step for many.

If Chesnokov makes the move to Tynecastle ahead of schedule and gets off to a strong start, it won’t be a surprise to see interest ramp up. For now, he remains a Hearts target, but the path he’s chosen has already brought Celtic into the wider conversation.

Rodgers and his recruitment team will keep their focus on current targets, but names like Chesnokov could come into play if they impress on Scottish soil.

  1. Let us stick to our own targets, for I am sure Brendan has them earmarked for himself, without taken the word from other places. We never seem to be in a hurry but signings so far seem to be good. Let those who do the signings get on with it . Hail Hail
