IT’S matchday at Celtic Park and a Europa League night under the lights that, in years gone by, would’ve been sold out weeks in advance.
But this time, the story is very different.
Despite the club reducing concession prices last week and offering a special rate for season ticket holders, lots of tickets remain unsold for tonight’s crucial clash with Sturm Graz.
Normally, a European fixture of this magnitude, especially one that Celtic must win to get their campaign back on track, would be snapped up in minutes.
Not this season.
The sight of empty seats on a European night at Parkhead would’ve been unthinkable not long ago, but it now feels symbolic of where things stand between the club and its supporters.
The fanbase has grown increasingly frustrated with the board, the lack of investment and the team’s performances on the pitch.
Celtic are coming off the back of a horrible 2-0 loss in Dundee after some poor form, with one win in their last five.
All of that seems to have fed into the ticket sales slump.
Even with reduced prices, fans are clearly reluctant to part with more money while the club struggles both on and off the field.
It’s not that Celtic fans don’t care. It’s that they care too much to keep turning up and pretending everything’s fine.
If the players needed any more proof of how important a performance and a win are tonight, this is it.
