Celtic’s women’s team put up a brave fight but ultimately succumbed to a 4-0 defeat against Real Madrid in their second Women’s Champions League group stage match.
The game, held at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, saw an early breakthrough from Scotland’s Caroline Weir, who fired Madrid into the lead with a superb long-range strike just seven minutes in.
Despite the early setback, Celtic displayed resilience, holding Madrid to a single goal in the first half. The Hoops managed to weather the storm as the hosts missed several chances to extend their lead, giving Elena Sadiku’s side hope heading into the second half.
Celtic began to push forward after the break and created notable chances to get back into the match. Emma Lawton and Murphy Agnew both found themselves with opportunities to level the score but were unable to convert. As the game wore on, Madrid began to assert their dominance, with Signe Bruun heading home a pinpoint cross from Eva Navarro in the 72nd minute to double their advantage.
Caroline Moller soon added a third for the Spanish side with a clever lob over the Celtic goalkeeper, before Linda Caicedo sealed the victory with a penalty, ensuring Real Madrid earned their first win of the Champions League campaign.
While the result may be a tough one to take, Celtic manager Elena Sadiku can take positives from her team’s spirited display against such a high-calibre opponent.
After two group stage matches, Celtic remain without points or goals but will look to build on their efforts as they continue their European journey.
