Celtic Women made history on Saturday, securing their place in Round 2 of qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time in their history.
The Ghirls won their maiden SWPL title last term and have since made a mark on the continent.
Elena Sadiku’s side took on Lithuanian outfit FC Gintra in the Round One final yesterday, and came away deserved 2-0 winners.
Shannon McGregor opened the scoring 22 minutes in, and although Mathilde Carstens missed from the spot moments later, Kit Loferski got the goal that sealed the victory with just under 10 to play.
With their historic victory, Celtic now enter the hat for Round 2 of UWCL qualifying.
They will play out a two-legged tie with another team in the champions’ path for a place in the group stage. Sadiku and Co. will discover their opponents tomorrow, with the draw taking place at midday CPT.
The first leg of the tie will take place on either the 18th or 19th of September, with the second being played out a week later.
The Ghirls have already made history by making it this far, but they won’t want to stop at the last qualifying round.
Indeed, the Scottish champions will want to progress and play against the best sides in the world in the most prestigious club tournament of all.
