Celtic Women’s return to action ended in disappointment this afternoon, losing out 3-0 to current SWPL Champions Glasgow City.

The Hoops played their first competitive fixture since the 5-0 win over Motherwell on the 13th of December but ultimately City was just too much for Fran Alonso’s side as they picked up the three points.

Going into the game there was optimism from the Celtic side of things, sitting in 3rd place just two points behind this afternoon’s opponents.

As the windy conditions look to play a massive part, City took the lead just past the twenty-minute mark through Aofie Colvill, who got on the end of a cross in the six-yard box.

On the hour mark, Alonso looked to change things bringing on a triple attacking substitute of Sarah Teegarden, Sarah Ewans and new signing Izzy Atkinson.

However, just over 10 minutes later City doubled their lead from a set-piece as Arna Asgrimsdottir slammed home an unmarked header.

The game was rounded off 15 minutes from time, with Niamh Farrelly finishing things off with a finish into the bottom corner.

Celtic will be frustrated with today’s result and performance, now finding themselves five points behind Glasgow City and Rangers who both occupy the Champions League spots at the top of the table.

The Women’s sides next fixture comes two weeks today, looking to bounce back with a victory away to Spartans.
