It is being reported that Aaron Hickey is set to undergo a medical at Brentford ahead of a £14 million plus add-ons move from Bologna [Sky Sports].

The Scottish international was once on Celtic books but made his name in maroon at Hearts before sealing a move to Italy.

Following the move to Serie A, Celtic pocketed a tidy fee of £450,000 with a sell-on clause included in Hickey’s deal when he moved to Gorgie.

As of yet, there is nothing concrete as to whether the Hoops would make anything off Hickey’s move to the English Premier League but lessons can be learned.

Having been at Celtic for a short time, he is another player who will have a question mark beside him.

The sell-on fee is great but Hickey could have broke into the first team and been a star at Celtic Park. The club have been linked and showed interest in the player since but with this big money move to Brentford about to be completed, the Hoops cannot compete with that type of transfer fee.

Going forward, it’s important that the youth academy shows a direct pathway for young talent to progress to the first team. Hickey is one we let get away and we must learn valuable lessons from that.
