If you followed the trials and tribulations of last summer’s transfer window, you will know the name Ko Itakura.

The Japanese defender within the ranks of Manchester City was a top target for Celtic as Ange looked to build his new look squad.

We’re unsure how far down the line Celtic got with their interest, but Ko would choose to join FC Schalke on loan. The centre-back featuring prominently with the German side during the loan spell.

Speaking after they had signed Itakura, Schalke sporting director Rouven Schroeder claimed Celtic had tracked the defender for over a year.

Shroeder said: “It took a lot of patience to sign him from Manchester City.

“For example, Celtic had tracked him for a year and were desperate to sign him, but we managed to beat them to it.” [RecordSport]

Although Ko has played very well during his loan period, it’s now being reported Schalke aren’t up for paying the £4.5m option built into the loan deal. [Football Scotland]

Could Celtic now look to reignite their interest in the 25-year-old given they’re well aware of the player’s talent?

Christopher Jullien’s time at Celtic looks like it could come to an end this summer. The bhoys need another centre back in the door, even if they manage to land CCV and if Ko could be bought for around the £4m mark, would it be prudent of the hoops to get a deal done? It seems like an open goal if Schalke aren’t going to put up the cash.
