Moritz Bauer believes his chances of getting into the Euro 2020 squad are slimmer because of the rise of Jeremie Frimpong at Celtic this season.

The Stoke defender came in during the summer hoping to make the right-back position his own. However, Hatem Elhamed and Jeremie Frimpong have held down the position at different times this campaign with Bauer getting the scraps when both men have been injured.

Bauer admits he came to Celtic in the hope of playing 50 games this season but it’s not panned out that way for the Austrian.

The right-back has been largely unspectacular when he has played.

Given the Euro’s are just around the corner, Bauer can take nothing for granted.

“My initial aim was to play around 50 competitive games, but it will be significantly less because the club is pushing a young talent in my full-back position.” He told Record Sport.

“It has not been a bad season for me, but also not satisfactory either.

“It is clear to me that I am not holding the best hand to get into the Austria squad for the Euro 2020 Finals and that time is not on my side.”

“We are determined to win the next two titles which would make it ten-in-a-row and that would be special because it’s never been done before.

“The home games at Celtic Park are special. I would compare the atmosphere to Anfield, only it is even bigger here with 60,000 fans.”

There’s still a lot of time between now and the end of the season but with a 3-5-2 in Neil Lennon’s back pocket and both Frimpong and Elhamed due back from injury, Bauer’s chances will become few and far between.

At this point, it looks like Celtic will not be taking up an option to buy on the defender.

Signed from Rubin Kazan by Stoke in 2018 for £5.5m(TransferMarkt), the defender looks like he’ll head back to his parent club.

  1. Did you see the moosh on the sevco dud Kevin “I’m a big shot” Thompson on BT sport tonight? Feckin tw@t was nearly in tears. Said nothing worthwhile, yet BT have him down as a pundit. The guy has never contributed to anything at ipox, and is jealous of what Broony has achieved. I don’t know what they pay him, but it’s money wasted. Whilst I’d love him to be dumped, I do love to see the wee sh1te squirm when his team gets humped. As for Gerrard, what a wee nonentity. No class, no style, no nuthin. He’ll be on the blower to Klopp tonight, HELP JURGEN…..
