Celtic crashed out of Europe midweek at the hands of Lazio. Two late goals from Ciro Immobile were enough for the Italians to secure the points in Rome.
It was a disappointing defeat for the Hoops and post-match, the club’s captain, Callum McGregor, made a surprising admission about his team in Europe. He said (Glasgow Times): “Especially when we’re the type of club we want to be, where we are signing young talent, developing it, and selling it on. We have been like that, probably, for the last 15 to 20 years. So that maybe tells you this isn’t a big surprise.”
Celtic’s recent European record is undoubtedly concerning, but as McGregor says, it shows the club’s recent transfer strategy. Brendan Rodgers wants more quality in the squad and results in Europe. An alteration of model could undoubtedly aid this but at the minute, it has to be said that doesn’t seem likely.
