ANDREW GUTMAN has given us a little more insight into why he chose Celtic over Steven Gerrard’s side after the defender revealed the allure of playing in the Champions League somewhere down the line was a big factor in his decision.

Andrew had a trial with the Ibrox club late last year before Celtic swooped in and signed the defender.

The left back revealed the real reason he is unable to play for Celtic at the moment due to work permit issues and has been loaned out to Charlotte to work under former Celtic coach Jim McGuinness.

Speaking about the move and upheaval, the defender believes he made the right choice and still feels very much part of Celtic, even if he is thousands of miles away at the moment.

“Celtic is just a fantastic club and it has such a history in the biggest stages – the Champions League.” Gutman told American Soccer News.

“I just decided in terms of my development and where I want to be with my goals that Celtic was the best path for me. So it was kind of a no-brainer.”

“For me it was an ideal situation. I had to go away from Celtic for a bit but at the same time, I still feel a part of it because the coach knows the Celtic way.

“I still feel like I am a part of Celtic and I can work to try to make it back to the first team there.”

At the age of 22, you would think the player will come to Celtic in a year or so after a work permit has been sorted. It’s not the usual type of deal Celtic do but they must see something in the young American.
